Former Juventus player, honorary president Boniperti dies

Giampiero Boniperti, a former Juventus player who later served as the club’s honorary president, has died, Italian media report. He was 92.

Boniperti won five Italian league championships and two editions of the Coppa Italia with Juventus between 1950 and 1961.

He formed what was labelled as the Magical Trio with John Charles and Omar Sivori.


He played 38 times for Italy, scoring eight goals.

With 182 goals scored for Juventus in all competitions, for many years he held the club's record until it was broken by A;essandro Del Piero.

Boniperti is third in the list of players with most games for the Italian side, at 443. Only Buffon and Del Piero have played more matches.

From 1994 until 1999, Boniperti was elected as a deputy in the European Parliament with centre-right wing party Forza Italia.
