Football supporters descened onto the streets of Sliema and Paceville on Sunday night to celebrate Italy's Euro 2020 triumph.

Italy beat England 3-2 on penalties in a dramatic shootout which saw Marucs Rashford, Jadon Sancho and Bukayo Saka miss three penalties in a row to hand the Azzuri their second European Championship.

Manchester United full-back Luke Shaw had given England an early lead after just two minutes, but Italy went on to control the match as England dropped further back, and Leonardo Bonnuci's second-half goal seemed almost inevitable - even if it did come courtesy of a goalmouth scramble.

The outcome of the game was always going to see wild celebrations in a football-mad country where half the population seemingly sides with Italy and the other half seemingly sides with England.

In fact, despite the warnings from police and health authorities to celebrate any victory in a safe manner, hundreds descended down to Paceville and Sliema.  Many did remain confined to their cars and to using their horns as instruments to express their joy, but others preferred the more physical route of celebration - even if public gathering laws should have meant that groups are restricted to six people.

Face-masks, which are still compulsory for the non-vaccinated and for anyone in a group larger than two vaccinated people, were also in short supply.

Malta Independent photographer Giuseppe Attard captured a number of shots from the wild celebrations.
