Maltese returning to Malta without vaccine certificate need permission to avoid hotel quarantine

Thursday, 15 July 2021, 12:12 Last update: about 4 years ago

Maltese residents returning to Malta without a recognised Covid vaccination certificate will need permission to carry out their mandatory quarantine in a location other than a hotel.

The hotel stay would cost a minimum of €1,400.

The Superintendent of Public Health has published the standards for quarantine that people arriving in Malta without a recognised vaccination certificate are obliged to follow.

People without a recognised vaccination certificate who travel to Malta coming from countries listed in a legal notice must be in possession of a negative PCR test that was taken no more than 72 hours before they arrive in Malta, the government said. This test needs to be presented in order to be allowed to board the airplane to Malta. Upon arrival, people without the vaccination certificate will need to undergo a mandatory quarantine period.

This period of quarantine needs to be followed at a quarantine hotel which is recognised as such by the Superintendent of Public Health. The applicable cost borne by a person in quarantine at a quarantine hotel is €100 per room per night, which includes breakfast brought to the room. Any other additional expenses need to be borne by the person in quarantine.

Persons aged 16 and over who are residents in Malta, however, can quarantine at an alternative address if authorised by the Superintendent of Public Health. Children aged 12-15 (both years inclusive) can follow quarantine at their home address if their fixed address is in Malta. In all cases, anyone remaining in the same household, even if vaccinated, will be in quarantine for the same period. Non-residents of all ages need to do quarantine in the quarantine hotel.

People who cannot take the vaccine for medical reasons don't need to undergo a quarantine.

Children between the age of 5 and 11 only have to present a negative PCR test when accompanied by adults who have a vaccination certificate.

Children under 5 can enter Malta without a PCR test.
