Thursday, 15 July 2021, 12:38 Last update: about 4 years ago

The public inquiry board into the assassination of journalist Daphne Caruana Galizia has drafted its report.

The board, made up of retired judge Michael Mallia along with former chief justice Joseph Said Pullicino and Madam Justice Abigail Lofaro, said that it has completed its mandate and drawn up its report. It will, in the coming days, present its report to the Prime Minister and the State Advocate as per the terms of reference.

The report will be handed over to them after the administrative work needed concludes.

The board will be announcing when the report will be presented and published at a later date.

Among other things, the inquiry was looking into whether the state could have prevented the murder of Daphne Caruana Galizia.

Caruana Galizia was killed by a car bomb in Bidnija just after she left her home, in October 2017. The public inquiry launched in July 2019, after the government gave in to pressure.

The Council of Europe had, in June 2019, approved a resolution which called for the government to establish an independent inquiry at the earliest opportunity.

The inquiry itself has heard testimony from the family, police officers, suspects as well as Melvin Theuma, the middleman. Politicians were also questioned.
