Lengthy power cuts force people into air-conditioned cars to avoid the heat

A host of lengthy power cuts throughout the night have forced some to seek refuge in their air-conditioned cars in a bid to avoid Malta’s summer heat.

Dreading more sleepless nights, the recurring lengthy power cuts across the island have forced a number of people to think out of the box in order to seek some respite as many people go whole nights without any electricity in the midst of a scorching heat wave.

Two Maltese mothers took to social media to express how they had spent over 5 hours in their respective cars with their children (one as young as 7 months old) in order to cope with their kids who could not bear the heat.

One of these mothers exclaimed how even the fish in her fish tank ended up “floating at the surface” and her fridge began to drip, as a result of the power cut.

Others said that they have had to invest in rechargeable fans, whilst others also said that they have had to hinge on their car for its air conditioning system.

A number of people claimed to have gone for as long as 12 hours without electricity – not ideal when Malta is battling a heatwave seeing temperatures of over 40 degrees celsius during the day and over 30 degrees celsius during the night.

Moreover, others lamented how ironic it is for the government to − at the same time as incessant power cuts across the island − be promoting investment in electric cars.

This year, the government has set aside a €2,500,000 budget for the 'Purchase of Electric Vehicles and Plugin-Hybrids' scheme which sees individuals receiving a grant of up to €9,000 when scrapping their old vehicle for an environmentally friendly electricity powered vehicle.

As one commenter put it: “wait a few more years and you won’t even be able to use your car’s AC, as the electric car battery will not even have enough time to charge.”
