Two drivers were injured on Friday evening in an accident involving a bus and a car which led to a huge traffic chaos in the Mellieha area.

Malta Public Transport said in a statement that a bus operated by Malta Public Transport was involved in a traffic accident in Selmun Hill, at around 6.40pm on Friday.

The accident was immediately reported to the authorities and “our Control Room also launched an internal investigation immediately, including CCTV footage of the accident.

“The footage shows a black vehicle driving on the wrong side of the road and colliding into the front of the bus. The company is informed that bus driver was injured and taken to hospital by an ambulance," MPT said

In a statement on Saturday, the police said that the bus was being driven by a 39-year-old man of Hamrun, while the other car involved was a Mercedes C220D, driven by a 56-year-old man from Mosta.

The police said that the Mercedes driver was also taken to hospital.

The bus driver suffered grievous injuries while the car driver was slightly hurt, the police said.

The accident also involved a third vehicle, a Fiat Cinquecento driven by a Bulgarian man aged 36 of St Paul's Bay, who was unhurt.

The accident sparked a heavy traffic chaos in the area, as the so-called Selmun Road is the main thoroughfare leading to and from Mellieha and Gozo. On a night when many Maltese were travelling towards the north on their way to the sister island for the Santa Marija weekend, the traffic jam that ensued took hours to be released.

Many drivers opted to take other roads involving Manikata and Mizieb, but these narrower stretches ended up being jammed too.
