PM says he too was victim of fake emails, calls for cybersecurity proposals to tackle disinformation

Prime Minister Robert Abela has said in a statement that he too was victim of a number of fake emails currently doing the rounds.

The Office of the Prime Minister said that fake emails had been sent in Abela’s name to some journalists on 15 August.

A report with the Malta Information and Technology Agency (MITA) had been filed immediately, Abela said.

The statement continues that while police investigations are ongoing, the Prime Minister had asked the National Cybersecurity Committee to use its expertise and all stakeholders involved in it to come up with proposals on how to fight acts such as these.

“These acts are not only condemnable, but have no place in society”, the Office of the Prime Minister said.

PN leader Bernard Grech was the latest victim of these fake emails – which are being sent to newsrooms through a Czech fake mailer platform – on Monday, and a number of newsrooms have seen their websites spoofed in order to make it seem like they were carrying content which they hadn’t actually written.

The content in all of these cases centred on the Daphne Caruana Galizia murder case, with key people such as parte civile lawyer and PN MP Jason Azzopardi, blogger Manuel Delia, and pardoned middleman Melvin Theuma being the target of the fake stories.
