John Dalli reacts to news that he will be charged, speaks of 'conspiracy' against him

Former EU Health Commissioner John Dalli has reacted to the news that he will be charged over the alleged attempt by his aide to solicit a €60 million bribe back when he was European Commissioner for Health.

Dalli claimed that Police Commissioner Angelo Gafa is acting on a deal with the then Director-General of OLAF, the Anti-Fraud office of the European Union, Giovanni Kessler. He said that Gafa had conspired with Kessler in 2012 as well as Swedish Match - a Swedish tobacco company. "They had not spoken to Swedish Match as the people who had a vested interest in the set up that was happening."

At the time, Gafa was an inspector and had investigated the Dalli allegations.

Dalli claimed that the Maltese Police and OLAF had told one of the Swedish Match employees to "continue lying and giving false information, to say that I had met with Gayle Kimberley on 10 February 2012, when this didn't happen."

Kimberley had been appointed by the Swedish company to lobby John Dalli's office at the time to help overturn a ban in the EU on snus.

Everyone will need to testify so everything will come out, Dalli said, adding that it will stop the rumours and statements made by internet trolls. "I have the opportunity to, where in the past I remained silent as I was a reasonable man, now make sure everything comes out."

He turned his aim at PN MP Jason Azzopardi, who had broke the news that Dalli was to be charged. "Is Jason Azzopardi a member of the police force?" He asked, questioning how Azzopardi knows everything that happens there. "Is this the rule of law we have?"

"He can do whatever he likes, for me he is corrupt."
