Governance consultant David Spiteri Gingell has urged trade unions and the Third-Country National (TCN) Alliance to coordinate a week-long strike for non-EU workers.
The proposal aims to demonstrate just how deeply Malta relies on these individuals following recent budget decisions that impacted foreign staff.
Writing on LinkedIn, Spiteri Gingell criticised political rhetoric that frames foreign workers as dispensable, a strain on public services, and scapegoats for wider governance failures. He argued that Malta must confront its economic reality, especially given an aging population and low birth rates that make foreign labor essential.
He warned that a seven-day walkout could severely disrupt crucial sectors including healthcare, public transport, retail, elderly care, construction, and hospitality.
