Stunning: Malta pictured by night from the International Space Station

Malta became the feature of a stunning night shot taken by French astronaut currently orbiting in space.

Thomas Pesquet shared the image to his Facebook page on Wednesday night showing how Malta looked from the space ship he was on board at night.

“Malta by night, or at least the inhabited islands. The smaller uninhabited islands have no city lights and so blend in with the Mediterranean at night - except when the moon is full and reflects on the sea, yes I feel poetic tonight,” he wrote.

The image shows the inhabited parts of Malta, with the night sky particularly lit up by the Freeport in Birzebbuga and by the island’s harbour areas – Valletta, Floriana, Sliema, St. Julian’s, the Three Cities and their surroundings.

St. Paul’s Bay and Bugibba are also conspicuous in the shot as is the Cirkewwa ferry terminal at the tip of the island.

Much of Gozo meanwhile is in darkness as is the Western side of Malta, perhaps belying where one can find some untouched countryside.

Pesquet also recently posted about Malta’s first space experiment – an experiment which looks at bacteria taken from the skin of diabetes patients to learn more about how they grow and how to treat them – showing the ICE Cube that the experiment is held in.

43-year-old astronaut Pesquet is current on board the SpaceX Crew Dragon for his second six month stay on the International Space Station.

He recently also had a moment of musical fame too: performing the closing bars of the French national anthem on a saxophone while aboard the International Space Station during the closing ceremony of the 2020 Summer Olympics, as the games got handed over from Tokyo, to Paris – where the games will be held in 2024.
