Speed cameras removed from Santa Venera tunnels exits… but they could be installed somewhere else

Thursday, 7 October 2021, 11:02 Last update: about 4 years ago

The speed cameras as one is driving out of the Santa Venera tunnels have been removed as “they are no longer necessary”.

The cameras were removed after the Cabinet approved a recommendation by Transport Malta.

Agency chairman Joe Bugeja said that after work on the rehabilitation of the tunnels was completed, there is no more need for the cameras, which limited the speed to 60km/h.

The traffic flow is now smoother, he said. The speed cameras led drivers to slow down upon exiting the tunnels and, instead of being helpful, they were acting as a deterrent, he told TVM.

Studies are being carried out to see if they could be installed in other parts of this stretch of road, which links the north to the south of the island, he said.

This is based on accident spots which could justify the installation of speed cameras.
