Maltese dwellings considered third darkest in Europe - Eurostat

According to Eurostat data, 9.4% of Maltese residents consider their households problematic for being under lit.

With a European Union average of 5.9%, Malta, France and Spain are almost double the 5.9% European average, with Spain and France scoring 10.6% and 9.5% respectively.

The lack of natural light during the day causes health and wellbeing problems to the residents. Apart from this, dark dwellings consume more energy, making them less efficient due to being so dependent on artificial light.

Throughout the recent years, the Maltese percentage has decreased. In 2018 the percentage of Maltese residents complaining of lack of daylight in their dwellings stood at 11.2%. In 2019 this decreased to 10%

The problem has its roots with high-rise apartments being built in Malta. This limits light and ventilation to the lower level apartments, which is a basic condition for well-being.

In contrast to Malta ranking with the highest percentage countries, Slovakia (2.6%), Italy (2.6%) and Cyprus (2.8%) ranked the lowest in residential dark dwellings.
