Chock-a-block Valletta car park renders three new EV chargers inaccessible

Thursday, 4 November 2021, 13:15 Last update: about 4 years ago

The congested car park at St James’s Counterguard adjacent to the Central Bank of Malta in Valletta has rendered three new electric car charging pillars inaccessible, as car park attendant attempts to manage an impromptu valet service.

People took to Facebook on Wednesday expressing their dismay with the lack of enforcement at this car park, as well as stating that in having placed the fast charging pillar facing away from the carpark, it couldn’t be used to its full potential.

Last Thursday, Minister for Energy, Enterprise and Sustainable Development, Miriam Dalli launched the installation of 22 new fast charging EV pillars, along with 108 medium-speed charging pillars across the island to be managed by the new ‘Charge My Ride’ App.

These new fast charging pillars being installed (QC45 DC) charge an EV within 0.5 to 3 hours whilst the medium-speed charging pillars (PC 22 G2 AC) charge an EV in-between 6 to 9 hours.

In the short term, 130 new electric car charging pillars will be installed across the island and together with the modernisation of existing charging pillars, the country is set to have over 360 charging points by the end of the year.
