Konrad Mizzi to be called to attend PAC meeting on 10 November - MP

Thursday, 4 November 2021, 12:35 Last update: about 4 years ago

Konrad Mizzi’s will be called to attend a Public Accounts Committee sitting on 10 November, at 2pm, committee member PN MP Ryan Callus told The Malta Independent.

Responding to a question by this newsroom regarding the sitting held on Wednesday, Callus said that like every witness, Mizzi was given the opportunity to make his statement. After the witness concludes their statement, the PN MPs will ask their questions, he said. “It is evident that Mizzi went yesterday so that he could just speak on his own, and he tried to do that. We felt, however, that when he started lying, we had to intervene.”

The session had gotten quite heated at times, and even personal.

Callus said that Mizzi, during the sitting, said he was proud to vote Labour in the coming election. “Why did Mizzi publicly say he would vote for the PL? It is a message to Robert Abela, telling the Prime Minister that if he leaves him alone, if he doesn’t allow the police to take steps against him, if he doesn’t corner him, then he would keep the dirt he knows on his colleagues hidden.”

Answering another question on last Wednesday’s PAC session, and whether the way such committees are led should change, David Agius said that normally PAC meetings are high-level, where questions and answers are made, and witnesses answer all questions. He said in yesterday’s session however, “there might have been some whose intention it was for the public not to understand.”

Callus said that he understands the disappointment felt by some over how the meeting developed.

“Mizzi lost all sense of décor (…) Mizzi went there to try and deviate onto other subjects which had nothing to do with what was being discussed.”

On the composition of the PAC, it was established years ago under a PN government, Callus said, adding that it serves to increase transparency and accountability taken by the Executive. The PN government at the time decided that it would be chaired by an Opposition MP, so that there would be a greater push for investigation, he said.

Callus said that yesterday was the first meeting they had with Mizzi and that they can keep going any day Monday to Sunday as long as Mizzi attends. “If he is man enough we hope he will attend every meeting we call him for and that he will be man enough to answer the questions we ask after he finishes his statement.”
