A cyclist was critically injured on Sunday afternoon after he lost control of the bike he was riding and crashed into a tree, the police said.

The accident took place at Saqqajja Hill, Rabat, at 5.30pm.

The cyclist, an Italian man aged 25, resident in Gzira, was taken to hospital with serious injuries.

Magistrate Charmaine Galea is leading an inquiry.
