Saturday, 11 December 2021, 10:52 Last update: about 3 years ago

Cyrus Engerer has been entrusted by the Group of Socialists and Democrats in the European Parliament to lead negotiations on the Waste Shipment Regulation, a Labour Party statement said.

This is the tenth report that the Member of the European Parliament will be negotiating since his a year ago.

“What applies to us within the European Union must apply to us outside of our territory. Dumping waste in third world countries is unacceptable. Apart from protecting human health across the world, we must realise that the global ecosystem must be safeguarded from all corners of the planet”, Engerer said.

Engerer stated that waste that is out of sight cannot be out of mind, since the effect it has on the planet and climate change will still be felt in their entirety. He emphasised that the Waste Shipment Regulation must ascertain transparency and track the movement of all waste by businesses. Furthermore, Engerer said that the dumping of waste to third world countries that is causing huge environmental damage must be banned, while a bigger push is needed to ensure the circularity of our economy.

“This is the time to focus on our planet. We cannot allow further environmental degradation. We owe it to our own human health and well-being”, Engerer concluded.
