Binge on baroque: Impressive 36 concerts feature in January’s edition of Valletta Baroque Festival

Thursday, 16 December 2021, 08:00 Last update: about 3 years ago

Binge on all or some of the impressive thirty-six concerts that feature in this January’s Valletta Baroque Festival. Now in its 10-edition, the prestigious festival boasts an eclectic mix of choir performances, grand orchestral suites, stately masses, organ concerts, harpsichord recitals, string duets, and violin solos to name some.

Speaking about the festival’s enviable programme, founder and artistic director Kenneth Zammit Tabona comments: “This year's musical programme has once again secured some of the best contemporary exponents of baroque music from the international and local sphere to contribute to the celebration of baroque Malta.”

Indeed, the festival is more than simply a celebration of baroque music as it gives pride of place to Malta’s astoundingly rich supply of splendid baroque architecture.

The programme features a varied mix of pure baroque performances, that is, baroque music on baroque instruments, to creative concerts that blend the contemporary with the baroque. Take, for instance, Goldberg Nights, four talented saxophonists’ take on Bach’s Goldberg Variations, or the aptly named Past and Present Fusions, featuring works by Biber and Piazzolla, performed by the German creative baroque ensemble Lautten Compagney Berlin.

Discussing the programme in further depth, Zammit Tabona waxes lyrical on the Orchestra of the Age of Enlightenment’s performance of Handel’s opera, Aci, Galatea e Polifemo. The concert features counter tenor Trevor Eliot Bowes gifted with the ability to sing a range from counter tenor to basso profondo.

The Valletta Baroque Festival is produced by Festivals Malta in  collaboration with Teatru Manoel and Visit Malta between the 14 and 29 of January 2022. For tickets and for more information, visit www.vallettabaroquefestival.mt
