Teacher takes health authorities to court over Covid vaccine-related injury

Monday, 20 December 2021, 10:48 Last update: about 3 years ago

A teacher has filed a judicial protest against the health authorities, claiming that her first dose of the Covid-19 vaccine caused her a shoulder injury.

The protest was filed against the Ministry of Health, the Superintendent of Public Health and the Director General of Health Services.

The woman claims she is suffering from ‘Shoulder Injury Related to Vaccine Administration' due to the way in which her first dose of the AstraZeneca vaccine was administered.

The teacher received her first dose of the vaccine on 3 March, at the University of Malta. The jab was administered in her left shoulder. Shortly after, the teacher started feeling a strong pain, which eventually spread to her entire arm and hand.

Her family doctor later confirmed that she was suffering from pain caused by the jab and ordered her not to drive.

She had to make several visits to Mater Dei Hospital and had several MRIs taken.

The woman was seen by a specialist who referred her to a consultant ortopaedic surgeon, suspecting that she had a ‘Shoulder Injury Related to Vaccine Administration'.

She received her second dose on 12 May 2021, this time in her right shoulder, and felt no pain.

In July, an orthopaedic surgeon told the teacher that she might need surgery since steroid injections she was being administered were not working to reduce the inflammation she was suffering from.

The plaintiff is holding the defendants responsible for the injury she suffered due to negligence on their part and is giving the health authorities two days to pay her damages. She said she will be taking further action unless her request is met.

The teacher is being represented by lawyer Mariah Mula.
