Cardiologist and former Nationalist MP Albert Fenech has passed away aged 70.
Fenech was one of Malta’s most renowned surgeons.

According to Times of Malta, Fenech is believed to have died of natural causes. He was found dead at his home.

Fenech, who lived abroad for over twenty years, served as a PN MP between 2013 and 2016.

He had helped establish Malta’s cardiology deparment in 1995 and worked at Mater Dei Hospital until 2015, when he was told that there were too many consultants and that room had to be made for the young.

He resigned from Parliament in 2016, telling then PN Leader Simon Busuttil that since his avenues in private practice in Malta were limited, he had started to seek employment in the UK.

He had also cited the apparent conflict of interest created by the position he had been offered by Vitals Global Healthcare, given the stance the party had taken against the hospitals privatisation deal.

In a recent interview with The Shift News, Fenech said he had been offered to set up VGH’s cardiac unit in Gozo but the project never materialised. The plan, he said, was “another white elephant.”

Fenech also said he had “absolutely” changed his mind about the deal which he had previously defended, adding that the hospitals deal had “bamboozled” people.

The PN offered its condolences to the Fenech family, saying that his loss was a loss for the whole of Malta. The PL also offered its condolences, saying that Fenech would remain remembered for his commitment to his patients above all else.
