Schools to reopen online, but classroom teaching resumes on 10 January

Friday, 31 December 2021, 15:29 Last update: about 3 years ago

Schools and education institutions will start the second term online, but will then physically return to classroom teaching on 10 January, a government statement read.

Childcare centres will also open on the same date.

The announcement was made following a meeting held at the Education Ministry, and agreement was found in the working group. The working group had been set up when the pandemic emerged in the country and is composed of representatives from three educational sectors - the State, Church and private schools, together with the Malta Union of Teachers and the health authorities.

The working group also reached agreement so that the situation in schools and classes would be evaluated from one day to the next according to advice from the health authorities.

In a seperate meeting with the Rector of the University of Malta and other representatives, as well as the University of Malta Academic Staff Association, it was agreed that the university will open its doors normally for practical sessions on 3 January. From 10 January, teaching will be held in person or online and it would be up to the respective faculties to decide which option to use.

University exams are planned to take place as already established. In case a student is unable to attend due to a Covid medically related case, they will be given the opportunity to have their exam reassigned for a few weeks after, rather than in September.

This comes after a number of students' organisations, including the University Students Council had complained that, in the case of physical exams, students who will be in quarantine during the January examination period would need to sit for their exam in September.

Education Minister Clifton Grima thanked all those involved in the meetings, as well as educators for their dedication and their work.
