Updated: Romanian man pleads guilty to 2015 theft, sentenced to 21 months in jail

A Romanian man was sentenced to 21 months in jail in connection with a theft in Santa Venera, which took place in November 2015.

In a statement, the police said that the man was arrested in Spain and brought over to Malta.

Electronic equipment and jewellery had been stolen in the robbery, from a residence in St Joseph High Road.

The man, George Cristian Mandrescu, aged 32, was living in Spain.

He was arrested by Spanish police and, after extradition proceedings were completed, he was flow to Malta On Thursday.

Mandrescu was charged before magistrate Ian Farrugia on Friday morning.

He was charged with theft aggravated by value, place and means. He was also accused of being a recidivist.

The accused, represented by lawyer Joe Brincat, entered a guilty plea during his arraignment.

The court was told that he had also admitted to his guilt during his statement to the police after being questioned.

After hearing the man confirm his guilty plea, the court sentenced him to 21 months in prison, from which the time he had spent in custody was to be deducted.
