Prime Minister Robert Abela has wished Roberta Metsola luck ahead of the EP president election on Tuesday.

Abela is in Strasbourg, where a memorial ceremony is being held to honour the late EP President David Sassoli, who died earlier this month.

In a tweet, he said he had a positive meeting with Metsola.

In comments to MaltaToday, the PM said he looks forward to working with the Maltese MEP on a European level but also for the national interest.

“I would like to wish Roberta Metsola good luck and that she may succeed in her candidacy. I’m sure from tomorrow we can speak about her proudly as the President of the European Parliament," Abela said.

"I know there were instances in the past. I won’t point fingers at who was right and who wasn’t. That is the past, I now look to the future to work with Roberta Metsola not only at a European level but also for the national interest,” the PM said.

Meanwhile, the Socialist group hinted Monday that it will back Metsola’s bid.

"We’ve reached a deal with the EPP Group and the Renew Europe to ensure a stable working majority until 2024 elections: strong institutional representation for S&D MEPs and we have agreed on a working document with our priorities: rule of law, women’s rights, social dimension an fiscal rules," it said in a tweet.

Opposition Leader Bernard Grech is also in Strasbour to support Metsola in her bid for the EP presidency. He is accompanied by Nationalist MEP David Casa.
