Energy bills: PN has been proven right again - David Agius

The Nationalist Party has been proved right again on discrepancies related to energy bills being received by consumers, deputy leader David Agius said on Thursday.

He was referring to the announcement in Parliament made by Minister for Energy, Miriam Dalli that a new and better mechanism was to be employed in the way energy bills are compiled.

Agius said that being proven right is not enough as the PN wants to make sure that citizens benefit from a fair and transparent system in the way energy bills are computed.

He added that a PN government would give back the nation all €50 million when the PN claims were “stolen” from water and electricity bills.

The Labour government has been stealing from consumers since 2013, Agius said. Some families have paid over €600 extra as some of them have handed over their bills to the PN so that they could be analysed.

PN MP Ryan Callus said that the Labour party is doing whatever it takes to force the idea on the nation that the problem that resulted in stolen funds knows its roots to what the PN did when in government.

In explaining the current problem of how these bills are calculated, Callus said that before 2013, families would receive six bills, with four being an estimate and two being actual. After 2013 the bills received were all actual, which ended in Maltese families paying for units at a higher price.

He said that the Labour government escapes every opportunity to address present problems.

Referring to yesterday’s questioning of Konrad Mizzi by the Public Accounts Committee, he said that Mizzi walking out of the meeting was unprecedented.

Callus remarked that the difference between the Labour and the Nationalists is very evident. The Nationalists want to refund the extra money back whilst the Labour will start using an improved mechanism for bills at the start of this month.

He also added that, unlike the Labour government, the PN is free to speak against the Electrogas project as it is not tied.
