Joseph Muscat spotted at PL political activity amid reports of candidate endorsements

Wednesday, 23 February 2022, 15:26 Last update: about 3 years ago

Former Prime Minister Joseph Muscat was spotted at a Labour Party activity in Marsaxlokk this morning, as reports circulate that he has started offering endorsements to certain PL candidates.

Nationalist media house NET News uploaded a picture of Muscat in attendance at a district party event in Marsaxlokk earlier today.

Times of Malta meanwhile reported that Muscat was making endorsement appearances for certain candidates, having already endorsed Chris Agius and Deo Debattista and being scheduled to appear in a party event to endorse new candidate Keith Azzopardi Tanti on Saturday.

Prime Minister Robert Abela has been exceedingly cautious in answering questions about his predecessor.  Asked whether he would be involving Joseph Muscat in his electoral campaign, saying that – unlike the PN – he does not reject those whom he disagrees with.

He however refused to confirm whether Muscat would be invited to speak at party activities or not.

Muscat resigned as Prime Minister at the end of 2019 under the cloud of what was Malta’s most significant time of political unrest as a result of alleged links between his office and the assassination of journalist Daphne Caruana Galizia.

He stepped down from the post in January 2020, with Abela taking the post after a leadership election where he faced off against Chris Fearne.

He has since kept a low profile, rarely commenting on matters in the public eye.  That changed when his family home was searched by police as part of an investigation into the Vitals Global Healthcare concession.

He has since given interviews and uploaded vlogs to his social media platforms.
