Scrapping Marsascala yacht marina plans is just another PL U-turn – PN

Tuesday’s PL decision to scrap plans for a yacht marina in Marsascala is just another U-turn, said PN MP Robert Cutajar during a press conference on Wednesday.

Speaking in Marsascala, Cutajar said that the planned marina should never happen and the PN is hoping that it does not happen either after the general election, if the PL were to win.

Mentioning the recent announcement by the Government, that it had taken back control of the Zonqor land which was handed over to the American University of Malta, he said that in this case the PN was proven right as well, as they had consistently advised against it.

Speaking about the party’s electoral manifesto, he said that the environment will be taken seriously as it plays a huge role in the quality of life of the nation.

Marsascala local councillor and PN candidate John Baptist Camilleri speaking as a councillor explained how together with the residents they have objected to the Marsascala marina plans from the start.

He said that finally it seems that the message got across that the residents do not want the marina, and that he hopes that the announcement made by PL leader Robert Abela about the marina plans are consistent.

“The message seems to have been received. I hope the message of the Prime minister is not something of convenience, but rather a conviction, and not a U-turn because of the upcoming election” he said.

The PN candidate said that although Tuesday’s announcement of the scrapping of the marina plans made many people happy, but it could have been a more positive experience if the residents of Marsascala were not made to take matters to court and paid out of their pockets; a term of six months which he described as being traumatising.

Camilleri said that they want future politicians to take the environment more seriously as it cannot be allowed to continue to deteriorate at this rate.

Taking this opportunity, he also mentioned how the Marsascala bay’s quay needs mending, as Marsascala residents are awaiting the day it gives way, leading to further damages.

PN candidate Janice Chetcuti said that Malta being a small state must better preserve the surrounding nature.

She explained how in accordance with a study, 70% of Malta’s youth wants to leave Malta for good. Subsequently she said that the PN wants youths to plan their future in the country, which can be achieved by making Malta more attractive.

Speaking on behalf of the PN, she said that the party believes in sustainable development.

Taking this opportunity, addressing PL leader Robert Abela and Education Minister Clifton Grima, Chetcuti revealed how the Marsaxlokk local council wants to relocate its building into the locality’s primary school’s gardens.

She explained how she, together with the Vice Mayor, has decided to go against the rest of the council as they do not wish to take up such space.

Chetcuti said that she wants both ministers to support their decision, as a mother herself she does not want to deprive children of such space.
