Watch: Traffic contraventions to be frozen for 6 months, giving people second chance - Grech

A new Nationalist government would set up a digital system which would automatically freeze traffic contraventions for six months. If during the period of six months, no other offense would be committed, the contravention would be waived, Opposition Leader Bernard Grech said on Wednesday.

Speaking in Hamrun, Grech also said that if the Nationalist Party is elected to government, it would seek to invest in more enforcement and security within different localities so as to give the public peace of mind about their safety.

“People not only want peace of mind when it comes to the cost of living, but also when it comes to the buildings we live in and our surroundings. Therefore, more security needs to be provided as everyone deserves to feel safe,” Grech said.

He noted that local enforcement would fall back under the responsibility of the local councils, whilst claiming that the Labour Party chose to remove many roles as well as funds available to the local councils.

“A new Nationalist government would also ensure that, apart from the responsibility, local councils would be provided with government funds so that they would have the opportunity and resources to carry out the necessary projects they deem appropriate for their locality,” Grech said.

Meanwhile, he added that the civic sense which makes a citizen responsible is of utmost importance and needs to be strengthened.

“Although it is important to have discussions about human rights and incentives, we also need to insist that each and every individual has an obligation to society,” Grech said.

The PN’s electoral program is based on three elements including environmental protection, respect for social obligations as well as good governance.

“We will be incentivizing and rewarding companies, organisations and NGOs that follow these three principles,” Grech said.
