Former PM Muscat on campaign trail with PL candidates

Saturday, 26 February 2022, 11:38 Last update: about 3 years ago

Former Prime Minister Joseph Muscat is still raising enthusiasm in the Labour fold, as he is endorsing candidates contesting in the upcoming election.

Muscat, who resigned in 2020 after his office was linked with the assassination of journalist Daphne Caruana Galizia, is making appearances at fringe events organised by PL candidates.

He was in Vittoriosa on Saturday morning, greeted by supporters with chants of “Joseph, Joseph” and “viva l-Labour”, with many wanting to take pictures with him. Vittoriosa forms part of the second district, which Muscat contested in 2013 and 2017.

PL candidates believe that being seen with Muscat gives them a stronger chance at the polls given the former Prime Minister’s standing among PL supporters.

Muscat has not featured in any PL activities and will not be contesting the election. His presence in some events has created some embarrassment as people are giving him warmer welcomes than those given to his successor Robert Abela.

Abela has been reluctant to comment about Muscat’s presence in these political activities.

Muscat has been taking to Facebook to express himself, in particular after his home was searched as part of the police investigation into the Vitals deal which saw three public hospitals passed on to the private sector.

He has also given interviews to selected media.
