Abela also spoke about the meeting he had in France with other EU heads of government, during which Russia’s invasion of Ukraine was discussed.

He said that in other countries the prices of fuel have skyrocketed, whilst the government in Malta has promised to keep the prices of fuel, diesel and energy stable.

He added that Malta together with other EU member state leaders will be giving a total of €500 million to the European peace facility to help the situation in Ukraine.

Abela said that the government will be keeping an eye on the sectors impacted by the Ukrainian crisis and will be supporting where needed.

Speaking about connectivity between Malta and Gozo, he said that the government is holding discussions with the companies operating the fast ferry project to improve the service.

He said that he believes that Gozo can reach a climate neutrality status before Malta does.

He thanked businesses who did not dismiss employees during the pandemic, adding that this meant that unemployment in Gozo was now seven times lower than it was under the last Nationalist government.

Abela said scheme a new Labour government will implement will “continue building on the foundations of a stable economy that we have created for this country during the difficult times of the pandemic”.

He said that if the PL is elected in government there are plans for Gozo to have its own centre for artists, strengthening of Carnival events and the finalisation of a museum for Gozitan historical artifacts.

Abela said that through the implementation of the PL’s election manifesto, the economy is expected to grow by 5.5% in the next legislature. Apart from that, a total of 50,000 careers will be created.
