A new Nationalist government would seek to develop a trackless tram system which passes through arterial roads in Malta in order to make better use of the space available in the country, the PN said Saturday.

Nationalist MP Toni Bezzina spoke about the proposals which incentivize better transport and mobility in Malta, specifically the development of a trackless tram network.

The proposal is based on six lines which would operate as circular loops. There will be nine hubs and a total of 13 interchange stations across Malta, from Birzebbugia to Cirkewwa, Bezzina said in a press conference.

“The aim of this proposal is to create a system which reduces traffic problems. It is also a system which seeks to encourage people to use public transport instead of opting to use their private vehicles,” Bezzina said.

He said that this project would develop a system of feeder lines. Since the trackless tram passes through arterial and distributor roads, a line will be developed to collect passengers from central areas and take them to the trackless tram.

Bezzina compared the PN’s proposal with that of the metro proposed by the Labour Party, saying that the PN’s proposal would not generate a significant amount of waste, but on the contrary, it would operate in an environmentally friendly way.

He added that the PN’s proposal has no hidden taxes as does the Labour government’s proposal.

PN Candidate Janice Chetcuti emphasised that the PN seeks to develop a sustainable and safe environment for the public.

“This project will be economic, efficient, clean, and quiet. It will consider noise pollution and avoid harming the environment at all costs,” Chetcuti said.

This project also seeks to give a solution to the traffic problem that is present in Malta. Many people do not use public transport because it is not efficient enough, however, this system would be efficient enough to encourage people to make use of public transport, she said.

She said that this project will not entail any digging of roads. Thus, no debris will be generated.

The trackless tram will also complement the use of cycling lanes.

The PN is committed to complete this project within one legislature - in five years, she said.
