PL MP Rosianne Cutajar was paid €28,000 in termination benefits from public funds for her resignation from the post of Parliamentary Secretary after she was involved in a scandal concerning a property transfer including Yorgen Fenech, according to a report.
The Shift reported on Tuesday that Cutajar received the termination benefit even though she remained an MP and even though she was made the chair of a parliamentary committee, which meant an additional €10,000 per year to her MP’s honoraria.
Parliament’s Standards Committee had, on 9 November, adopted the conclusions and recommendations of a report that found Cutajar in breach of ethics. Standards Commissioner George Hyzler had found that Cutajar more likely than not had received a €46,000 brokerage payment, not declaring it.
The Standards Commissioner had looked into the situation after reports had read that Cutajar and one of her political aides – Charles Farrugia - allegedly received around €46,000 each as brokerage fees for the sale of a €3.1 million Mdina property to Yorgen Fenech.
She was suspended from her post in Cabinet some weeks after the scandal first broke after significant pressure, a suspension which was confirmed when the Standards Commissioner found Cutajar in breach of ethics.
The payment of her termination benefit was confirmed from a Freedom of Information request filed by The Shift.
Cutajar is contesting the upcoming general election on the sixth district, which includes her home town of Qormi.
