Saturday, 19 March 2022, 11:16 Last update: about 4 years ago

The new book ‘SLIEM U SAĦĦA’, a collection of reflections written every morning on Facebook during the last five years by Minister Evarist Bartolo has been launched with the participation of Professor Charles Mifsud, Conrad Borg Manché, former Labour Minister and former European Commissioner Karmenu Vella and Elena Borg. During the evening Clare Agius, read excerpts on different social and political topics from Bartolo's book.

Clare Agius also read an excerpt from the introduction to the book written by President Emeritus Ugo Mifsud Bonnici, stating that ‘the people have the right to know what they think of those presenting themselves to represent them. Political confession is of great value, and not only, or mostly, for political history. Public confession testifies to the humanity of the confessor. '

Karmenu Vella said that his daily routine starts with  Evarist Bartolo’s facebook messages. ‘His writings present the values of a humble  man, but one rich in thoughts. I always remember Varist as a progressive man, striving for change. I admire him for not being afraid to say what he believes in a calm and persistent manner. Where there is a need for reprimand, he  doesn’t shy from doing  it. He gives valuable advice and comes up with solutions. '

Conrad Borg Manché said he has been following Evarist Bartolo since childhood and has always looked up to him as a role model. "Varist has always put his social and political beliefs ahead of his own personal interests. Whoever really votes with a good mind should read Evarist Bartolo's thoughts', said Borg Manché who revealed how in one of HIS most difficult moments in his political life, Evarist Bartolo was  one of the few who gave him  his full support. "I will remember this for ever," said Borg Manché.

Elena Borg, a therapist who works closely with children, said Evarist Bartolo's reflections and thoughts show his humanity. "I always regarded Varist as the father of modern politics who has always guided us in the right direction. His humanity and  deep thoughts give a voice to the vulnerable, to those who have no voice."

Prof Charles Mifsud said he saw a similarity between the mentality of Thomas More, the man of principle who lived in the 16th century and stood up to King Henry VIII of England, with the mentality of Evarist Bartolo. Prof Mifsud described Evarist Bartolo as a conscientious thinker, committed to society ready to serve in politics with his aspirations for social justice.

At the end of the evening, Minister Bartolo spoke not only about the publication but also about the challenges he faces every day in his role as Minister of Foreign and European Affairs especially now due to the invasion of Ukraine and the ongoing trouble in Libya.
