In the final week of the election, Prime Minister Robert Abela said that the Nationalist Party has been urging voters not to cast their vote on Saturday, hinting that the PN is hoping for a low voter turnout to maximise its chances.

Addressing followers in Rabat, Gozo, Abela said that under a PN-led government, pensioners and workers are going to see a reduction in their savings because “a number of initiatives which the PL is pledging such as the increase of pensions will not be continued.”

“Next Saturday, the choice is clear between the past and the future, people have to vote for the future of the country. Not voting is giving the PN a seal of approval to go back to the past. The PN can barely run a party let alone a country.”

Shifting focus to Gozo, Abela said that the PL commitment to the sister island is to continue building on the exponentially growing economy “which this government had started” as well as investing in various projects aimed at improving the quality of life on the island.

Abela also said that the PL’s political direction ties with Gozo achieving the status of carbon neutrality. “Reaching this environmental goal for Gozo is a big part of what we believe in.”

The educational system in Gozo will also be a priority for the Labour Party, with incentives to continue the educational journey of children as well as incentivising extra-curricular activities for a holistic education.

“We do not want to see anyone fall behind. We have to provide the facilities for the right of education at all costs.”

Abela then said that Gozo is going to be at the centre of the digital and electronic transformation Malta will be going through under a PL government. “We firstly want Gozo to be the first island to have a fully electric public transport fleet as well as giving a 10% increase of incentives for private electric cars.”

In his closing statement, Abela mentioned first-time buyer incentives while stating that the government’s hands are tied with the local plans created by a PN government in 2006 when it comes to development
