Carmel Cacopardo to step down as ADPD leader

Monday, 28 March 2022, 17:59 Last update: about 3 years ago

Carmel Cacopardo has announced that he will be calling time on his tenure as leader of ADPD, only a day after the party put in a much improved showing in the general election when compared to five years ago.

Cacopardo said in a blog post reacting to his party’s result that he will be stepping aside in the interest of the party, saying that it is now time for someone else to take the helm.

"I am now 66 years old and I don't think it's in the party's interest for me to stay on as leader for much longer," he wrote. "I've long informed my colleagues that they need to find someone else to lead the party in the future."

He said that he would not be leaving the post immediately as this would damage the party, but said that it is the time for someone to take his place and continue building on what the party has achieved thus far.

"I will help however I can, not just in the transition to a new leadership but also in the work that still needs to be done. I still have a lot of energy!," he said.

ADPD achieved 4,747 first count votes during last weekend’s election, and has already announced that it will be mounting a constitutional challenge in court to gain representation in Parliament on the basis that it amassed more votes than one quota.
