The Malta Independent team gives late night update from Kyiv

Friday, 1 April 2022, 10:58 Last update: about 3 years ago

The Malta Independent’s Neil Camilleri and Giuseppe Attard are in the Ukrainian capital city of Kyiv, as their coverage of the ongoing war and humanitarian crisis continues.

In a late night update on Thursday night, they explained how a delay in their train trip from Lviv to the Ukrainian capital had meant that they arrived in Kyiv at 8:45pm.

They were struck by how the city was blacked out: the station was blanketed in darkness, as was the rest of the city.

Only minutes later, an air raid siren rang out.

With a city-wide curfew imposed from 9pm onwards, both were ultimately forced to spend the night in Kyiv’s train station with many others who have been using the station to seek shelter from air raids.

Police and army presence was, as expected, high, but volunteers were also on hand in their numbers to offer food, drink, and a place to sleep in the station.

Friday is the team’s first full day in Kyiv, and they will be providing more coverage of the scenes over there as the day goes on.
