Malta’s drivers paid a collective total of almost  €1 million in fines for using their mobile phones while they were driving last year, figures tabled in Parliament show.

The figures were tabled in Parliament on Tuesday by Home Affairs Minister Byron Camilleri, in response to a Parliamentary Question asked by PN MP Ivan Bartolo.

The data shows that the authorities handed out a total of 9,599 contraventions connected to a driver using a mobile phone while they were driving.

The total value paid by drivers was of €971,781.52.

The fine for drivers caught using their mobile phone while driving stands at €100 after legal changes instituted way back in 2015.  Drivers are also penalised with three to six penalty points on their driver’s license.
