Nationalist Party MP Julie Zahra has put forward proposed amendments in order for the arts sector to be protected in the Constitution.

The spokesperson for arts and culture said the PN believes that in a modern country, the government should not only be preoccupied with the economic and social development of the country but also the cultural development of Malta.

“Culture is part of our identity, and the state is obliged to strengthen this together with giving it the space to grow as an identity. We need better economic opportunities which are vital in protecting our culture.”

Zahra said that art is part of our patrimony and therefore it requires the respect it deserves. “The changes include integrate art and culture in our education system and promoting careers in the arts industry.

“A mentality change is needed in order to bring up a generation of children who appreciate and motivate themselves within the sector, these are our principles as a party.”

Through the amendments that the PN has proposed, the rule of law in Malta will then state that cultural and art development in the country will be given as much importance as the rest. “This will send a clear message that Malta is a cultural hub with laws that state so.”

Zahra thanked all artists for expressing themselves in unique ways and keeping the cultural sector in Malta alive. “We (PN) hope that these artists will find the government behind them in this situation.”
