Police officers were called to the site but, on their arrival, the Spaniard did not obey their orders and behaved aggressively.

The officers used a taser gun to control the man and arrest him, the police statement said.

He was taken to Mater Dei Hospital for observation.

The police said that three patrons were injured in the attack – two Italians and a Swiss. All three were taken to hospital for treatment. The Swiss man suffered grievous injuries while the Italian men were slightly hurt.

Before entering the restaurant, the Spaniard also caused damage to a Ford Focus that was being driven by a Pakistani man, aged 28, the police said.

Magistrate Leonard Caruana is leading an inquiry.
