The Nationalist Party wants the new Chief Permanent Secretary Tony Sultana to publicly sever all ties and contacts with the Labour Party, and to no longer be a Labour delegate in charge of the party’s IT systems.

Apart from that it also wants for Sultana to publicly and transparently “be very impartial and non-partisan in his decisions.”

In the last few days, Tony Sultana has been appointed Chief Permanent Secretary by the Government.

In its statement the PN said that this comes a few days after the Ombudsman's call for the Public Service to be rebuilt into a more professional service, and for it to be “built on meritocracy, where civil servants can serve the Maltese people without fear and favour.”

“It is unfortunate to see the Government go against its word, and to appoint a person who is well-known to be affiliated with the Labour Party and who took an active part with the party in the last general election to the highest office in the public service.”

The PN is also appealing to the Labour Government, that if it continues to take such decisions in a partisan way, it will be very difficult to break once and for all the culture of fear and favours done in the public service.

The PN said that it is giving Tony Sultana the benefit of the doubt “as long as they make wise and appropriate decisions”, but insisted that the Prime Minister shoulder the political responsibility for this action.
