The security cameras installed in four main tunnels across the country aim to assist in tackling traffic congestion and driver safety, and were not installed with the aim of issuing fines, the Transport Ministry told The Malta Independent.

"They were installed with the scope of assisting Transport Malta's Traffic Control Centre"

This newsroom contacted the ministry last week following rumours that cameras were being installed in tunnels to deter people from changing lanes inside and that fines would be issued against those caught. It is understood that the cameras were installed at Tal-Qroqq, Kirkop, Santa Venera and Ta' Ġiorni.

The ministry said that any information regarding fines or reduction of driving licence points is incorrect.
