‘Hello Summer’: An exhibition of painting by Anna Galea

Sunday, 5 June 2022, 08:30 Last update: about 4 years ago

Dr Charlene Vella is the curator of the exhibition and she is also a senior lecturer at the Department of Art and Art History, University of Malta.

Anna Galea is Malta’s foremost watercolorist whose talents are recognised beyond our shores. Anna has exhibited her art extensively across Europe, Dubai, Melbourne, Bogota, New York and Washington DC. Anna is a dedicated wife, mother and grandmother, but she is also extremely devoted to her art. Despite being proficient in the watercolour medium, Anna also paints in other media which she uses for her large-scale floral paintings, but also for non-representational art.

I have had the pleasure and honour to assist Anna Galea in curating some of her past exhibitions, the most recent being Art Metaphor, a joint exhibition of works by Anna and renowned Emirati artist Azza Al Qubaisi, organised in Abu Dhabi and Dubai by the Embassy of Malta in the Emirates in 2021.

Hello Summer! introduces us to a kaleidoscope of colours in paintings that are representational as well as abstract and executed with great technical skill where the artist’s imagination also comes to the fore. Anna, a prolific artist, always has something new to offer.

This collection of watercolours offers merriment and relaxation for the viewer: just what most of us need in what we may, with great optimism, call a post-Covid-19 world.

These watercolours are, in fact, very much in line with Galea’s spirit and jovial character. The paintings in watercolour are iridescent and translucent, showing off the artist’s mastery of the watercolour medium which she has acquired over the years and it is no wonder that she is often invited by the International Watercolour Society (IWS) to demonstrate her technique to fellow artists, the latest being a festival that the IWS organised in Izmir, Turkey, in May of this year.

We cannot think of a better way than to usher in summer with these colourful watercolours by Anna Galea exhibited in such a prestigious location!

TheHello Summer’ exhibition is being held at The Phoenicia Hotel throughout this month
