Nobody was injured when a small part of the Marsascala promenade appeared to give way on Tuesday morning.
Pictures uploaded to Facebook by the locality’s mayor Mario Calleja showed that a chunk of pavement on the promenade had sunk downwards.
Calleja said that nobody was injured and appealed to people to avoid walking near the area.
He said that maintenance works will start as soon as possible in order to repair the area.
The area which gave way is part of an elevated section of the promenade which was purpose built in order to allow rainfall to reach the sea.
In a separate social media post, Marsascala deputy mayor Janice Falzon said that the council had been calling for interventions on the promenade for a long time, adding that there have been technical reports stating that immediate works were needed to strengthen the foundations.
