The Nationalist Party has questioned why the government has not removed all the deckchairs from Comino’s Blue Lagoon Bay.

In a statement, the PN said that it had been closely following the situation pertaining to Blue Lagoon and to the deckchair and umbrella operators which operate over there, and that it was questioning why not all the deckchairs are going to be removed from the bay.

This comes after Tourism Minister Clayton Bartolo announced that deckchairs on the sandy beach in Blue Lagoon will not be allowed, but that a more limited number of deckchairs will be allowed on the quay.

Following this, the PN questioned: “now that it is known that there was an agreement in place with operators between 2015 and 2017, if there is no agreement at the moment, why weren’t all the deckchairs and umbrellas removed?”

The PN said that Blue Lagoon can be found on everyone tourist brochure and website, but that what is being sold on these brochures is not what tourists are finding when they get there.

The party said that public land should be enjoyed by everyone, not just by those who are protected by the government, and therefore appealed for the necessary enforcement to take place and to be prioritised particularly when it comes to public land.

“This is because public land should be used only in the best interest of the citizen, while those who break the law should not be allowed to continue to do so,” the party concluded.

The statement was signed by PN Deputy Leader and spokesperson for tourism Robert Arrigo and by the part’s lands and consumer rights spokesperson Rebekah Cilia.
