Final works are underway by Infrastructure Malta to complete a project, with an investment of around €500,000, to embellish the belvedere, the stairs, and the sidewalks in the Saqqajja area in Rabat.

This was announced by Minister for Transport, Infrastructure and Capital Projects Aaron Farrugia in the presence of Mayor of Mdina Peter Sant Manduca and the architect responsible for the project, Corinne Dimech.

The Minister explained that this project is being carried out in collaboration with the Mdina Local Council, and in consultation with the Superintendence of Cultural Heritage due to the historical context of the area and the surrounding buildings. Minister Farrugia stated that the project will have an impact not only on residents but also on businesses in this area, which has cultural and touristic value.

Architect Dimech explained that prior to covering the surrounding stairs and sidewalks with heavy slate brought from Gozo, the water services, sewerage, and systems for rainwater catchment were changed. Underground pipes have also been routed in case there is a need to increase decorative lighting and street lighting in the future.

The selection of materials used in this landscaping project was made according to recommendations given by the Superintendence of Cultural Heritage to ensure that they integrate with the aesthetic of the area, specifically with the historic building of Casino Notabile which was built in 1887.

Last year, IM carried out a €1 million project in this area, to strengthen the foundations of the upper part of Saqqajja Hill and the surrounding buildings, including the historic building of the Holy Spirit Hospital. As part of this project, six-storey underground concrete columns were built for new foundations. IM also carried out works in the lower part of Saqqajja Hill, where a new lighting system was installed and the road was resurfaced with asphalt.

Mayor Peter Sant Manduca stated that these interventions which are being undertaken by the Local Council and Infrastructure Malta will elevate the Saqqajja Hill, an area which is enjoyed by a number of residents and tourists.
