Watch: Rat infestation persists in St Julians’ Birkirkara Hill

Tuesday, 5 July 2022, 12:28 Last update: about 3 years ago

For several months now, Birkirkara Hill in St Julian’s has been plagued by a rat infestation.

Rats, some of which have grown the size of small cats, roam freely on the pavements on both sides of the road.

The problem started several months ago when works started on a residential complex across the road from The Malta Independent offices, with the works seemingly disturbing (or perhaps attracting) a nest of rats.

Despite the fact that project was completed some months ago and the area cleaned up, the infestation continues unabated, with rats often seen feeding from garbage bags that are many times left outside on the pavements for hours.

The pesky rodents seem to be oblivious of people and traffic and can often be seen crossing the road over and over, crawling under parked cars and sniffing at people’s doorsteps.

Residents said it is a disgrace that such scenes are witnessed in a place like St Julian’s, which is a popular town for Maltese and tourists.

St Julian’s mayor Albert Buttigieg said it is good to point to irresponsible tenants, explaining that only recycling bags are collected on Tuesdays. “As long as the government keeps rejecting our call for enforcement, the problem will remain so.”
