An open space serving for children’s recreation in Birgu was inaugurated on Friday.

The open space, known as the Birgu Playing Field, was inaugurated by the Minister of Public Works and Planning Stefan Zrinzo Azzopardi and Birgu mayor John Boxall.

Zrinzo Azzopardi said that the Planning Authority, through Development Planning Funds, has provided financial assistance which amounts to almost €120,000 for the renovation works of the project. He said that the funds granted will serve as a great help for the local council to carry out projects in the community.

New swings and benches have been installed on the site, and the paving has also been repaired so that rainwater does not flow into the ramparts. The wall on the site, as well as the outside vegetation were restored, whilst the soil in the tree troughs was increased.

Zrinzo Azzopardi said that the project is another testament of the government's work to ensure that urban areas continue to be renovated sustainably, for people to enjoy a better quality of life.

Boxall thanked the PA for the fund which will greatly help the local councils, as well as workers and volunteers in the local council who helped during the works of the project.

Present for the inauguration was the Chairperson of the Development Planning Fund committee of the Planning Authority architect Vincent Cassar, and the Director General of the Public Works Department architect Stephen Bonello.
