Planning application to officially change Wied Fulija into public park filed

A planning application has been filed proposing the official change of use of the rehabilitated Wied Fulija landfill to a public park.

In July, Prime Minister Robert Abela had said that Wied Fulija had been converted from a dumping site to an open space for families, inaugurating it. However the official change of use application had not, at that point, been filed with the Planning Authority.

WasteServ started the rehabilitation of the Wied Fulija landfill in August 2019 – which was covered by a separate permit, restoring 6.5 hectares into a green area with a paved pathway for the public to be able to access the cliff tops, from where they can enjoy the panoramic views of the surrounding area.

Abela, in July 2021, had said that two billion kilogrammes of waste were removed from this valley in Zurrieq as part of a €4.5 million project, effectively marking the completion of the works.

An application was then filed with the Planning Authority last November to officially change the use of the park from a rehabilitated landfill to a public park. The application has now been made public. While the works were completed through the past permit, generally speaking the change of use permit for the ex-landfill would look into whether the site can be safe to visit and officially be labelled as a park.
