‘Corruption has seeped into every area of life in this country’- Repubblika

The NGO Repubblika has reacted to the latest government scandal, which concerns Transport Malta, by saying that corruption has seeped into every area of life in Malta.

An unnamed government minister and political party were linked to a corruption case surrounding driving theory tests involving three Transport Malta officials, who were all charged in court earlier this week.

The NGO said in a statement that it was worried about a number of aspects related to this story.

The first is that the case is another sign of the structural degradation of the country’s institutions, something which the NGO said is a fruit of the impunity which exists in Malta.

“The filth in our country is not just when it comes to millions, but also so that one can pass a driving test,” Repubblika said.

The NGO recalled that some months ago the media exposed a mileage tampering scandal in second-hand imported cars, and noted that while the police had moved forward with other cases, no action appeared to have been taken on this.

“It is evident that corruption has seeped into every sector of life in this country, and has become a major source of income for a clique of people,” Repubblika said.

The NGO said that it is also worrying that high officials and a political party have been mentioned in connection with the case, and pointed out that it appears that we have reached a point where there isn’t a clear distinction between party and government and that both are intertwined together in order to work towards their own interests.

Repubblika said that the people have a right to know the full truth about what happened, and said that they are expecting all the necessary steps to be taken against those who abused of and betrayed the faith given to them when they took their office.

The NGO concluded that it remains committed in its fight against the “tentacles of corruption which have taken over everywhere.”
