Malta hosts meeting of heads of National Drug Law Enforcement Agencies

On Monday, a meeting of the heads of National Drug Law Enforcement Agencies began in Malta.

The meeting hosts all the heads of such agencies from all countries, and is this year taking place at Dar il-Meditteran in Valletta. The meeting is over a number of days and ends on Thursday.

Home Affairs Minister Byron Camilleri and Foreign Affairs Minister Ian Borg said that it is an honour for Malta to host such an important meeting.

Minister Borg stressed that the fact that the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime chose Malta for the meeting shows the commitment Malta has to continue the fight against drug trafficking.

He said that Malta believes in a multilateral approach so that international challenges would be addressed, especially when it comes to organised crime.

"No country can continue this fight on its own. There is the need for more collaboration between agencies in different countries. Malta is honoured to continue bringing all countries closer together," he said.

Borg said that through the seat Malta has on the UN Security Council, the country will continue moving forward the agenda of peace and sustainability on an international basis.

Minister Byron Camilleri said that Malta continues keep drug trafficking under control to break criminal circles who are pushing these illegal substances, while finding solutions for those who unfortunately continue to use drugs.

Camilleri praised the police in the fight against drugs, and said that up until now, this year there was a record in terms of the confiscation of cocaine by the police.
