Sister of murdered Italian judge to take part in events commemorating Daphne Caruana Galizia

Maria Falcone will be in Malta at the invitation of NGO Repubblika for the commemorative activities of the fifth anniversary of the assassination of journalist Daphne Caruana Galizia.

Falcone, a professor of law, is the sister of Giovanni Falcone, a judge who was as assassinated by the mafia in Capaci, Sicily on 23 May 1992. He was killed together with his wife magistrate Francesca Morvillo, and three policemen of his personal escort, Vito Schifani, Rocco Dicillo and Antonio Montinaro. The five were killed in an explosion on the road between the airport and the city of Palermo.

Maria Falcone has worked over the last 30 years to promote a culture of justice against the mafia both in Italy and internationally.

She founded Fondazione Falcone in 1992 which promotes teaching methods, scholarships, social conferences, specialized publications, and contemporary artistic productions. The Foundation is recognized by the United Nations for its valuable social and civic contribution.

Fondazione Falcone and Repubblika will be jointly hosting a seminar on Saturday 15 October 2022 at the university campus in Valletta to discuss the challenge of having public institutions which work within a framework of rules that encourage behaviour of public officials where their integrity is never questioned.

The seminar will bring together academics, journalists, and people who practice relevant professions to discuss this theme.

Alessandro De Lisi from Fondazione Falcone will be taking part in the seminar which will be conducted by George Vital Zammit. The public will be able to follow through a live stream on Repubblika's social media.

The next day, October 16, Maria Falcone will join the organizers in the activities of the fifth anniversary of the assassination of Daphne Caruana Galizia, which will include a vigil in Pjazza l-Assediu il-Kbir in Valletta, where she will make a speech.
