IN PICTURES: Silent vigil for Daphne Caruana Galizia held in Bidnija

Sunday, 16 October 2022, 16:13 Last update: about 3 years ago

A silent vigil was held at the place where Daphne Caruana Galizia was killed five years ago today.

A minute’s silence in Bidnija was followed by readings from pieces which the journalist had written in the run up to the 2017 general election: pieces where she sounded that warning that major scandals within the government were afoot.

Flowers, candles and tributes were laid in the field in Bidnija – close to her home – where Daphne’s burning car ended up after the bomb which killed her was set off.

Present at the commemoration, which was organised by the NGO Repubblika, were the sister of Italian anti-mafia judge Giovanni Falcone, European Parliament President Roberta Metsola, PN MEP David Casa, former PN leader and current EPP official Simon Busuttil, the British High Commissioner and other journalists and activists.

A demonstration calling for justice will be held later in the day at 6:30pm, culminating in a vigil at the Great Siege Monument at 7:30pm.

The Malta Independent photographer Giuseppe Attard was in Bidnija to capture the event.
